| When I was five years old, my Master, Vasiliy Antonov, bound me as his apprentice in the Brotherhood of Chains. The Brotherhood is an ancient order of Chaos Mages from my homeworld, Gaena, and they are called the Chained because each may be recognized by the ritual manacles they wear: their Chains of Office.
Upon graduation from apprenticeship, each Brother is bound by his or her former master to an idea, a concept, which will shape that mage's life. Each service performed in the name of this idea adds a single link to the chains that hang from that Brother's manacles. Vasiliy Antonov was bound to the Heart, and his chains were so long they dangled on the floor when his hands were held above his head. When I called his spirit from beyond the grave and across worlds in order to bless my graduation, he kissed my brow and placed upon me the burden of Memory. It is in Memory of my Master that I write these pages. |
